History

Boone Low Ratliff Architects, Inc. is an award-winning firm that performs a variety of architectural and planning commissions, and seeks those projects that are challenging and have the potential for creative solutions. The firm was a general partnership between David C. Boone FAIA and Jacquelyn Low AIA, Architects, Santa Cruz, California until the retirement of Mr. Boone in January 2004. After working together for more than seven years, Jacquelyn Low and Monica Ratliff became partners in January 2009. The firm is now a corporation.

Experience

Jacquelyn Low and Monica Ratliff have more than thirty years of professional experience in architectural project planning, development, design and construction. Approximately 50% of the firm's work is in housing, including remodels and additions to existing structures, new single-family residences, and multiple family housing development projects. Other experience includes master planning and feasibility studies for non-profit organizations, private schools, churches, libraries, and facilities for government and institutional clients.

Approach

The firm's approach is to first become familiar with the client's objectives and the project site. Design solutions are then developed based on those criteria. Building designs are derived from an analysis of site characteristics, client objectives, and the context of the surrounding neighborhood, and are unique for each client and site. We enter into each commission without preconceived ideas, and the final solution develops from mutual discussions between client and architect.

Process

Construction documents are prepared in-house using both computers and manual drafting and are either prepared or directly coordinated and supervised by the partners. Computer capabilities include the ability to show all portions of a building through 3-D modeling. This enables the client to follow and understand the project through renderings, perspectives and interior views. Consultants are used for structural, mechanical and electrical engineering, landscaping and other specialized services. We work consistently with the same consultants to ensure coordination efficiency.

Jacquelyn Low has passed the rigorous international exam to become a Certified Passive House Designer. She took the international passive house training course from the smashing Passive House Academy staff fall 2011. "I am thrilled to have passed this exam. It is excellent training and I'm a greener Architect having achieved the certification."

The Live Oak Resource Center has been awarded a LEED Platinum rating, a first in Santa Cruz County. This building is also the 10,000th project to receive LEED certification in the United States, a significant milestone for the U.S. Green Building Council.

"This award affirms Boone Low Ratliff Architects' long-standing commitment to creating sustainable architecture. We are grateful to the County of Santa Cruz, the clients and staff of the Live Oak Resource Center, and the talented members of our project team for partnering with us to achieve this goal."
